Natural Stone, Porcelain and Ceramic Tile Use Cases

Porcelain Tile

Porcelain clays are denser and thus less porous than ceramic clays, which makes porcelain tile harder and more impervious to moisture than ceramic tile. Due to its through-body composition, porcelain tile is considered more durable and better suited for heavy usage than ceramic tile.

When a ceramic tile is chipped, you find a different color underneath the top glaze. If a color-body porcelain is chipped, the color keeps on going, all the way through. As a result, chips that occur on color-body porcelains are much less noticeable or visible than ceramic tiles.

Ceramic Tile

Many wall tiles are ceramic due to their lighter weight. Glazed ceramic flooring tiles have a hard protective top layer that makes the tiles more impervious to water and stains, making them naturally resistant to problems associated with high humidity conditions. Ceramic tile flooring typically costs less than porcelain tile.

Natural Stone

Natural Stone refers to a number of flooring, wall, and ledgerstone products quarried and cut to the shapes of tile and wall panels from the earth.  These products include Granite, Marble, Limestone, Travertine, Slate, Quartzite, Sandstone, Onyx, and others.

The use of natural stone not only has an appearance of elegance and sophistication with its natural beauty; it is timeless.  It doesn’t become outdated or go out of fashion which is an added benefit, as you do not have to redesign your home every few years to keep up with the latest trends.

Natural stone tile flooring is often used to create a sense of space, by seamlessly using natural stone floor tiles throughout both the interior and exterior of your home.

Marble tiles can create a classic, luxurious look, whilst slate tiles create a more rustic look.  Highly polished limestone tiles create a contemporary feel and some travertine floor tiles manage to combine elegance with rustic style.

Natural stone tile usually requires more ongoing maintenance than porcelain or ceramic tile but many homeowners choose to use stone over man-made tile because there is nothing else like it and no two tiles are identical.  Stone tiles are porous, especially compared to porcelain tile, so spills should be cleaned up quickly.  Stone should be sealed on a regular basis to keep it looking new and avoid water absorption.
